To the men and women of the Air Force District of Washington - as you relax and enjoy the time off with your family and friends on Thanksgiving, please know that I am extremely thankful for your service and dedication. All Americans are able do the same because of the sacrifices you and your families choose to make.

This is also a time to think about our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen serving around the world and not as fortunate to be home with their families. Currently, more than 40,000 Airmen are deployed supporting joint and coalition forces. This includes 12 Airmen from AFDW, more than 80 from the 79th Medical Wing and 134 from the 11th Wing.

And, let us not forget our wounded warriors, their families, and the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. They personify the cost of freedom and show us all why it is so important to be thankful for the things many of us take for granted. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season.

Each of us can also be thankful to the American people, whose steadfast support has not wavered, particularly during the last decade of life after 9-11. Know that your country is proud of you and the job you are doing.

I am also tremendously proud to report that the AFDW Combined Federal Campaign has reached nearly $359,000 - that's 102 percent of our goal! Your kindness and generosity will help people in need during the holiday season and throughout 2012. Thank you!

I am grateful to be able to serve in the world's greatest and most respected Air Force alongside each of you! Evelyn and I wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving.
