As we recover from the festivities, fireworks and long holiday weekend in
celebration of our Nation's Independence and 240th birthday, the Air Force
District of Washington will now celebrate its 11th Anniversary on Thursday.

The Air Force District of Washington was reactivated as a fully-capable,
independent Air Force unit July 7, 2005 with our mission to provide
Contingency Response, Ceremonial Honors, and Operational Support Across the
Nation's Capital and Worldwide following our vision -- Renowned for
Excellence, Prepared to Respond - AFDW has provided unparalleled operational
support to the entire National Capital Region and a myriad of global
operations and missions.  Our mission is one of the most unique assignments
in our Air Force, vast and complex.
AFDW is the parent command to the 11th Wing, 79th Medical Wing, and 844th
Communications Group.

The 11th Wing at Joint Base Andrews, Md., provides contingency rotary-wing
airlift and base operating support to more than 50 tenant organizations.
Through the U. S. Air Force Band and the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard, the
11th Wing also provides ceremonial and musical support throughout the NCR
and worldwide.

The 79th Medical Wing, headquartered at Andrews, consolidates the Air
Force's NCR medical assets into one organization, providing regional care
and support to Joint Forces Headquarters-National Capitol Region and Joint
Task Force-Capitol Medical Team operations. It also serves as the portal for
returning wounded, ill and injured warriors through the Aeromedical Staging
Facility.

Finally, the 844th Communications Group at Andrews provides enhanced
communications reliability, survivability, information capabilities, and
user support in the NCR.
This brief descriptor only scratches the surface of vast scope of

responsibility and the wide-ranging, global impact AFDW has for our Air
Force and our Nation.  Over the coming months, we will publish feature
articles on a myriad of our mission sets here to illustrate the spirit of
AFDW, highlight the positive and profound impact of our mission, and
showcase the professionalism of our AFDW Airmen and civilian Airmen.

As we celebrate our anniversary, I encourage you to continually check our
official AFDW Website to learn more about AFDW and our abundant mission and
to keep up with the constant content we are posting about AFDW people,
events and many accomplishments.
