Empowerment Through Self-Identification at the Department of the Air Force Published Aug. 29, 2024 By Capt Elizabeth Amos and Kathryn Hill, AF Disability Action Team (DAT) Air Force District of Washington JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. -- In our diverse and dynamic Department of Air Force (DAF) community, every civilian employee plays a crucial role in fulfilling our mission. Upholding our commitment to an inclusive workplace, the DAF Disability Action Team (DAT) encourages all civilian employees to self-identify their disabilities under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This act not only supports the hiring, placement, and advancement of individuals with disabilities, but also empowers the DAF to create a workplace where everyone is counted and acknowledged. Commanders should support and encourage their civilian employees to self-identify. By self-identifying, you help paint a clearer picture of our workforce diversity, enabling the DAT to tailor resources, support reasonable accommodations, and afford opportunities to better support each member of our DAF team. The DAF places great importance on privacy and confidentiality in this process. Rest assured, the information you provide is used exclusively for generating internal reports that aim to enhance employment practices for individuals with disabilities and will not impact your job security or conditions. Participation is entirely voluntary and is invaluable in helping track our progress towards a truly inclusive workplace. By choosing to self-identify, you are not just counted, you are included. This act of self-identification affirms that every member, regardless of ability, is a vital part of the DAF team with equal opportunities to succeed. The DAT urges you to self-identify your disability status. Your participation is crucial in driving change and ensuring that all voices are heard and valued. Together, we can foster a community that represents and supports every member, making the DAF a place where everyone is included and empowered.
