Inaugural support Web sites online

  • Published
Armed forces personnel throughout the District of Washington are preparing once again to provide ceremonial support to the presidential inauguration during the 10-day inaugural period in January 2009 as part of the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee, or AFIC.

Historically, more than 5,000 servicemembers have participated in the celebration on and leading up to Inauguration Day, both in view of the public and behind the scenes. This support is traditionally comprised of musical units, marching bands, color guards, salute batteries and honor cordons that render appropriate ceremonial honors to the commander in chief.

For more information on Inaugural Day support provided by the military, visit AFIC's Web site.

Most of the inaugural parade route along Pennsylvania Avenue will be open to the public free of charge; however, the U.S. Congress controls tickets to the actual swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol on Jan. 20. Traditionally standing room on the National Mall for unticketed members of the public is available to witness the swearing-in ceremony. It is recommended that unticketed members of the public arrive at the National Mall no later than 6 a.m. to witness the swearing in at noon. For information on obtaining tickets to inaugural events, visit the Joint Congressional Committee On Inaugural Ceremonies Web site.
