The Airman and Family Readiness Center and friends of the Center are hosting "Military Spouse Appreciation Day" at the Base Exchange May 8 at 11 a.m. to recognize military spouses on their special day.

Often referred to as the "toughest job in the military," military spouses, and their efforts in supporting the mission, will be acknowledged through the A&FRC with a carnation, gift bag and note of thanks.

Military spouses are invited to come by the appreciation display, which will be filled with informational brochures, and pick up their complimentary bag. Military members are also invited to get a bag and flowers for their spouses as well. Representatives from the A&FRC will be on hand to provide information on available base resources and answer questions.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated the Friday before Mother's Day as National Military Spouse Appreciation Day, to recognize the service and sacrifices of military spouses. Today, the day is celebrated at bases worldwide.

"It is our opportunity at the A&FRC to pay tribute to spouses who play an important role in our nation's defense," said Shelly Walker, 316th Force Support Squadron A&FRC community readiness consultant. "As a military spouse myself, for 22 years, I understand the significance behind the day. It's a time to recognize the unsung heroes and the heroes behind the scenes."

"It is a day that we want to say 'thank you' to our military spouses for all the support they provide to their military members and to our country, for the sacrifices that they make each and every day that they are separated from their loved ones; waiting for them to come home from a deployment," said Patricia Botkins, 316th Force Support Squadron A&FRC director. "Spouses keep the home fires burning during the separation, they ensure the kids are taken care of, and when our military members come home, they welcome them with open arms. Spouses are special - they are the 'heart link' to our families and we appreciate each and every one of them."

Ms. Walker said the A&FRC offers spouses a wealth of information and seminars to participate in, such as the upcoming Heart Link orientation program.

"Even if you've been a spouse for years, if you are new to the area - or even if you've been in the area a while - you can learn something from the Heart Link program," Ms. Walker said. "It's a fun way to learn about the Andrews mission, Air Force customs and traditions, finance, legal, health and wellness, and other support services on base."

Ms. Walker added that other topics covered in the class include how to replace your Department of Defense identification card, especially when the military member is deployed or on a temporary duty assignment, how to obtain a special or general power of attorney and why it is necessary, and how to decipher a Leave and Earnings Statement for pay amounts and housing allowances.

The next Heart Link seminar is scheduled for May 21 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at The Club at Andrews and free childcare is available with advanced registration.
