AFDW commander confirmed for third star, new job

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Maj. Gen. Darrell D. Jones for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as Deputy Chief of Staff, Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters United States Air Force, Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

General Jones, currently the commander of Air Force District of Washington, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., will replace Lt. Gen. Richard Y. "Dick" Newton III. General Newton has been named the Air Force Assistant Vice Chief of Staff and Director Air Staff.

As the deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services, General Jones will serve as the senior Air Force officer responsible for comprehensive plans and policies covering all life cycles of military and civilian personnel management, which includes military and civilian end strength management, education and training, compensation, resource allocation, and the worldwide USAF services program.

General Jones has previously served in a wide variety of assignments at base level, major command, secretariat, combatant commands and Headquarters U.S. Air Force. He has commanded a squadron, group and two wings. The general also led the Headquarters U.S. Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel's Issues Team, served as Director of Personnel for Pacific Air Forces, and was Director of Manpower and Personnel, Headquarters U.S. Central Command.

Prior to his current assignment, the general was Director of Force Management Policy, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower and Personnel, where he was responsible for establishing force management policies for more than 675, 000 Air Force Total Force military and civilian personnel.

The Senate also confirmed Maj. Gen. Darren W. McDew to succeed General Jones as the AFDW commander.

General McDew is currently the Vice Director for Strategic Plans and Policy, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

Change of command ceremonies are being planned, with dates to be announced.
