LEADERSHIP HUDDLE | NFL labor organization director shares insight at AFDW Squadron Commander and Spouse Orientation Course By Master Sgt. Amaani Lyle Air Force District of Washington Public Affairs JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. -- As part of ongoing efforts to convey leadership principles, Air Force District of Washington tapped into its partnership with the executive director of the NFL Players Association to mentor and advise attendees at the 2019 AFDW Squadron Commander and Spouse Orientation Course. Unanimously elected in 2009, DeMaurice F. Smith has had a major role in representing NFL professional American football players and helping to negotiate terms of collective bargaining agreements. During his guest speaker presentation to field grade officers primed to take command of various squadrons, Smith described the power of good communication, team building, and management in the context of disorder. He compared the complexities of advocating for the NFL's roughly 2,000 players to some of the triumphs and challenges commanders will face in balancing the needs of Airmen with mission necessities. He also noted the source of support spouses can be as commanders mature into their leadership roles. In gratitude for his candid advice and time, AFDW commander Maj. Gen. James A. Jacobson presented Smith with a customized Air Force Academy football jersey bearing the number 47, representing 1947, the year the Air Force entered into its own branch of service from the Army Air Corps. Smith noted that though he's amassed many jerseys from professional players over the years, this is one is special to him. "I have some very cool jerseys, but this is one of the best I've ever seen," Smith said. The five-day immersive course wrapped today and AFDW hosts a course with new commanders and spouses each year. LESSONS FROM THE FIELD | “The intent of this is to give future commanders a sense of how other people in similar lines of work lead,” said Maj. Gen. Jake Jacobson, commander of the Air Force District of Washington. “We’ve designed this whole course from beginning to end to bring in external viewpoints to give them another perspective on how to deal with similar problems.” Read more from Military Times about the leadership panel with the Washington Nationals here:

According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), there are approximately 2,700 active-duty military working dogs in the U.S. Armed Forces. They are deployed around the world, with a large number serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. VISIONARY WOMAN | Women’s History month has drawn to a close, and Air Force District of Washington also observed National Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29. Vietnam War military history is rich, though less familiar are the women who served as members of the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps and the Women’s Air Force during the conflict. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation estimates that approximately 11,000 military women were stationed in Vietnam during the conflict, and nearly all of them were volunteers. Though 90 percent served as military nurses, women also worked as physicians, air traffic controllers, intelligence officers, clerks and other positions in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps, U.S. Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Army Medical Specialist Corps. On April 4, 1975, Capt. Mary Therese Klinker, one of the eight military women killed in Vietnam, was the flight nurse on the U.S. Air Force C-5A Galaxy that crashed near Saigon. She was 27. The mission, Operation Babylift, placed Southeast Asian orphans with families in the United States. The crash claimed the lives of 138 people, including many Vietnamese children and a number of female civilians working for U.S. government agencies. Klinker was posthumously awarded the Airman’s Medal for Heroism and the Meritorious Service Medal, and was the last nurse and only member of the Air Force Nurse Corps to be killed in Vietnam.
