Tribute to the fallen
Retired Col. Arnold D. Gabriel, U.S. Air Force Band conductor emeritus, lead the Band in an outdoor concert at the Air Force Memorial June 6. The program, which paid homage to the D-Day invasion, June 6, 1944, included “Hymn to the Fallen,” from “Saving Private Ryan” by Hollywood film composer and U.S. Air Force alumnus John Williams. Colonel Gabriel served as commander of the Band from 1964-1985. Prior to his commissioning, he served as a machine gunner with the famed 29th Infantry Division during World War II, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star and earned the French Croix de Guerre. (U.S Air Force photo by Airmen 1st Class Alexandre Montes)
