Service members volunteer at D.C. Special Olympics
Anthony Sokenu, D.C. Special Olympics assistant director of sports, briefs volunteers Feb. 23 on the proper procedures and rules before the bowling competition in Hyattsville, Md. “What you have unfortunately with Special Olympians is that they do not have the same interactions and the same opportunities as athletes without special abilities,” said Sokenu. “Special Olympics provide athletes a safe haven for their abilities, not their disabilities. It allows individuals without special needs to see our athletes see what they can do and see how they contribute to society.” (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Christopher Ruano)
