AFDW Capital Airman: Senior Master Sgt. Steven Woodard Published Dec. 20, 2013 By Air Force District of Washington Public Affairs JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. -- Senior Master Sgt. Steven Woodard, Air Force District of Washington fire functional, is an AFDW Capital Airman. Why did you choose to become part of the Air Force family? I joined the Air Force for the educational benefits and because I wanted a new challenge. What is your job and how does that impact the AFDW mission? My job is to support the fire department strategically, and provide consultation on fire related issues to AFDW leadership. Share part of your Air Force story: I arrived in Southwest Asia 11 days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack and convoyed to a small air base. During the buildup of the base, Master Sgt. Evander "Andy" Andrews died in a forklift accident during the construction of the airfield. He was the first American to die in the campaign against terrorism. We had very somber memorial for him and loaded his casket on a plane. That was a day I will never forget.
