Wishing you a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend Published May 24, 2014 By Maj. Gen. Sharon K.G. Dunbar Air Force District of Washington Commander Joint Base Andrews, Md. -- AFDW Family, Please accept my best wishes for a safe and memorable extended Memorial Day weekend. Established in 1871 after the end of America's Civil War, Memorial Day is a time to honor those who've made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Not surprisingly, America's first large observance of Memorial Day was held in 1871 at Arlington National Cemetery. As we reflect on all that Memorial Day should mean to us, attend Memorial Day events, or just relax with family and friends, know that your dedication and service to our nation's defense matter greatly. What you do makes a profound difference to all who serve...and brings honor to those who have given their lives in defense of our nation. Memorial Day weekend also kicks off the "Critical Days of Summer", a traditional AF focus on the importance of safety and being good Wingmen for one another. So, please go easy and be extra careful as you embark on the traditional fun summer activities. I'm counting on you to take good care of yourselves and others -- this weekend, and always. A number of our teammates will be working this weekend, but hopefully all will enjoy at least some well-deserved time away from work this Memorial Day weekend. Thanks for all you do and for making it such an honor to serve with you!
