A second lieutenant assigned here reenlisted Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Cody during the 2014 Air Force Association's Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition, Sept. 15.

The opportunity came as a complete surprise, said 2nd Lt. Nicholas Hiser, the executive officer for the 844th Communications Group. The lieutenant attended the conference to listen to Air Force senior leaders, and he agreed to complete a short-notice request, without knowing what he was being asked to do.

"It was a great honor," Hiser said. "This was my first reenlistment, and it was the Chief's last."

With Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III and Cody's co-workers and friends in attendance, Hiser reenlisted the Chief for another three years in the Air Force. Walking out with the Chief's coin in his pocket, Hiser was thankful he was given the chance.

"This experience will always be memorable - I don't know how I'll top that," Hiser said. "This will be a moment I look back on and talk about when I'm old and gray."

Hiser, originally from Covington, Va., served the Air Force as an enlisted electronic warfare technician for six years before earning his commission through ROTC at the University of Nebraska.
