The 11th Wing has been awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for outstanding performance from Oct. 1, 2003 until Sept. 30, 2005, the Air Force Personnel Center announced March 5.

All Airmen assigned to the 11th Wing during the specified period are authorized to immediately begin wearing the associated ribbon.

According to AFPC, The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award is presented by the secretary of the Air Force to numbered units that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units.

During the recognized time frame, the 11th Wing participated in several high-visibility events including the State Funeral for President Ronald Reagan, the 55th Presidential Inauguration, the establishment and operation of the Joint Air Defense Operation Center for protection of the nation's capital from air threats and the reactivation of the Air Force District of Washington. Each of these events occurred while the wing deployed more than 700 Airmen from the National Capital Region in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Joint Forge and Operation Joint Guarding.
