The Air Force District of Washington Airmen of Distinction gave a dozen Airmen $20 in gas Sept. 12 at the Bolling Shoppette.

"Wow," said Senior Airmen Adiah Phillips, 11th Mission Support Group. "I feel like I just won the lotto."

The AOD took the opportunity to help Airmen and increase their membership at the same time.

"Part of our mission is to give back to Airmen," said Senior Airman Tim Chacon, AOD president and 11th Wing Public Affairs. "We are also trying to raise awareness of our council and promote the things we do for Airmen in the National Capitol Region. Gas giveaways are one of the ways we're active in the community."

The AOD is open to all Airmen E-4 and below stationed in the National Capital Region. It's an organization for Airmen to help organize volunteer opportunities and special events, while assisting each other in a variety of ways. There are no dues or fees to join.

Since there are no dues or fees, the AOD has to earn money through fundraising. The $240 given away in gas was from several food-booths that AOD Airmen worked during the Joint Service Open House at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

The AOD's efforts seemed to pay off.

"I didn't know much about the council," said Airman 1st Class Chastidy M. Smith. "I'm very interested in the council and what they do. I plan on attending the next meeting"

Information about all AOD events is sent out via e-mail to all Airmen in the AFDW. Airmen wishing to receive AOD e-mails or wanting more information should e-mail Airman Chacon at timothy.chacon@bolling.af.mil.

The AOD meets the last Tuesday of every month at the Bolling Clubs.
