'All hands' accountability exercise planned for AFDW Airmen

Airmen are required to use "all mechanisms available" to communicate their status to their unit of assignment in the wake of a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or any event that could separate them from their unit. With the 2009 hurricane season just a few months away, Air Force District of Washington will conduct a final test of its accountability processes using the new Web-based Air Force Personnel Accountability and Assessment System, called AFPAAS.

The "all hands" exercise will take place May 19 through 21 for all Airmen and civilians assigned or attached to AFDW.

AFPAAS allows commanders and units to account, assess, manage and monitor the recovery and reconstitution process for personnel and their families affected and/or scattered by a wide-spread catastrophic event, every step of the way.

The system is user-friendly, and accessible worldwide for use by active duty, guard and reserve Airmen, Air Force civilians and family members to report their status throughout a disaster or crisis event. The Web security allows for log-in from any computer, however, only approved readiness personnel and commanders with CAC access can view personal identification information.

"AFPAAS provides valuable information to all levels of the Air Force chain of command, allowing commanders to make strategic decisions that facilitate a return to stability after a crisis," said AFDW Commander Maj. Gen. Ralph Jodice. "The system also speeds up the assistance process so we can locate and help our affected Airmen and their family members prior to or immediately following a disaster."

During the exercise, Airmen not able to update AFPAAS or contact their unit by telephone must contact Headquarters Air Force Personnel Center at (800) 435-9941 to report their status.
