Register today for the 2009 U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic

Air Force District of Washington leadership has announced the dates for the 2009 U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic, taking place May 30-31 in Arlington, Va.

The USAF Cycling Classic offers cycling enthusiasts of all abilities the opportunity to participate in this National Capital Region event. 

The two-day event begins May 30 with a series of amateur and professional races
starting at the Clarendon, Va., Metro stop.

On May 31 at 7 a.m., cycling enthusiasts of all abilities can challenge themselves to an early morning ride during the Crystal Ride. The Crystal Ride is a non-competitive event that begins and ends in Crystal City and passes by the Air Force Memorial. This race offers a 12.5-kilometer course that is closed to traffic but open to both serious and casual amateur cyclists. Bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded for those who can complete two, four or eight laps within the 3.5-hour race window. The entry fee for
the Crystal Ride is $25 for active duty, Guard and Reserve military personnel, and $35 for all others. Each rider will receive an event T-shirt, timing chip and participation award medal.

Following the Crystal Ride, cycling teams and sprinters from the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy and West Point will compete in the Service Academy Shoot-Out, a two-part competition that includes both cycling and running.

The men's pro circuit race kicks off at noon. This race features top U.S. and international teams racing 12-and-a-half laps on the 12.5 kilometer circuit, finishing in Crystal City.

Finally, the kids' race begins at 12:05 p.m. on Crystal Drive in Arlington, Va. This free event is open to children 9 and younger, with three different course lengths. All children must have their own bicycles, and helmets must be worn. Big wheels and training wheels are allowed.
