The Naval District of Washington Fire Department, in conjunction with the District of Columbia Fire Department, have conducted various exercises since June 1 on Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

A mix of firefighters from both departments have worked together daily on training that will end June 12.

"Training is going exceptionally well," said J.C. Carroll, D.C. Fire Department Rescue Squad 3. "Exercises like this prepare us for real world events. You can never have enough training."

The various exercises provided a chance to improve team work, inoperability, collapse rescue and command and control. Simulated exercises included gas explosions, destructive weather conditions and terrorist attacks.

In addition, the training was a chance for veterans to teach the rookies tricks of the trade.

Mr. Carroll added, "Older guys were teaching the newer guys everything they know so everyone can be on the same page on how to respond."

In the process of privatizing base housing, the coming demolition of Hickam Village housing created a prime location and opportunity for the joint training effort.
