The local chapter of the Air Force Association held its first Salute to the Nation's Capital Region Embedded Airmen June 25.

Twelve Airmen, including two Bolling Airmen, were presented with awards for outstanding performance.

Maj. Gen. Ralph Jodice, Air Force District of Washington commander, as well as Chief Master Sgt. Paul W. Wheeler, AFDW command chief master sergeant, were on hand to present awards to the recipients. General Jodice expressed his pride in the joint team and offered his congratulations to the award winners.

Capt. Janeka V. Jones, 11th Mission Support Group joint basing team lead, was presented the AFA Salute to NCR Airmen Award for managing 21,962 authorizations worth more than $1.7 billion in support of the NCR mission, mentoring pre-teen girls on study techniques, reading to children at book stores in the local community and donating 10 hours of volunteer time weekly, among other achievements.

"I was in total shock when I was presented that award, I felt so honored," she said. "That award was really for all the senior leaders who haven't been 'one-mistake-type' leaders. I've made some mistakes, but they encouraged me to get up and try again."

The other Bolling award recipient was Master Sgt. Jebodiah Eaton, U.S. Air Force Band, who dedicated 120 hours for a memorial video for the International Firefighters Association, a tribute to 259 fallen firefighters. The video was distributed to more than 400 schools and fostered volunteer service among teens.

AFDW encompasses the 11th Wing, 316th Wing, 79th Medical Wing and 844th Communications Group.

"It felt good to win this award," said Senior Master Sgt. Michael McMillan, 844th CS. "I just do my best to stay positive and make the best of every day."
