The HQ Air Force District of Washington Awards Recognition Program provides supervisors the opportunity to recognize the hard work of their Airmen and civilian employees for superior performance and accomplishments to the overall mission success of HQ AFDW.

The many successes at AFDW are dependent upon the ability and dedication of assigned personnel.

"We have lots of superior performers and the awards program recognizes their great work," said AFDW Command Chief Master Sgt. Pat Battenberg.

Employees are nominated for their overall contribution to the AFDW mission -- as well as to their directorate -- in the areas of leadership and job performance, significant self - improvement, and community involvement that impacts the mission and directorate.

"All Airmen are expected to perform well as leaders in their primary job and contribute to the mission," Chief Battenberg said. "However, being singled out for extraordinary personal and professional sacrifices before your peers makes the awards recognition program all the more special for the winners and their directorates."

Another key area that weighs heavily in the awards recognition program is significant self-improvements. Factors such as off-duty education and other relevant training enhance an Airman's value as a military citizen.

Additionally, community involvement plays an important role in the awards program. A member's positive leadership and involvement in both the military and civilian community shows he or she has a vested interest in what is going on outside of work. Participation in unit advisory councils, professional military organizations, associations, and events show how well-rounded nominees are as a whole.

"The level of excellence and expertise in AFDW impresses me on a daily basis," said Chief Battenberg. "Nominating excellent performers not highlights the Airmen, it also allows supervisors to gain more writing experience in documenting the accomplishments that separate their directorates from the rest. This is truly a win-win scenario, when the supervisor, the directorate and the nominee all get a chance to be recognized," he said.

The next HQ AFDW quarterly awards ceremony takes place April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Club on Andrews AFB, Md.
