Headquarters AFDW personnel and their families celebrated the Third Annual AFDW Family Day picnic July 23, 2010, at Freedom Park on Andrews AFB, Md.

Hot weather didn't put a damper on the festivities and fun at the picnic where more than 100 people gathered for the event.

Analyses, Assessments and Lessons Learned organized the annual event to celebrate AFDW and the Year of the Air Force Family. "The goal of the Family Picnic was to bring the members of AFDW and their families together for a day of great food, entertainment and fun," said Lt. Col. Henry Lane, deputy director Analyses, Assessments and Lessons Learned.

The picnic included a variety of family activities, food and refreshments, including a best dish recipe contest, disc jockey, moon bounce, lip sync contest, and water slide. The day culminated with the traditional dunk tank for the top five people who received the most votes to sit in the dunking booth.

The dunk tank booth was the highlight of the day as personnel took turns trying to dunk the top five vote recipients: AFDW Command Chief Master Sgt. Pat Battenberg, Director of Staff "TK" Kearney and spouse Kathleen Kearney; Ryan Ferrell director Manpower, Personnel and Services; and Lt. Col. Henry Lane deputy director Lessons Learned. They each got a chance to beat the heat with a cool refreshing dunk in the tank as AFDW members took turns hitting the bull's-eye.

For the lip sync contest the "Village Vamps" and their version of Y-M-C-A by the Village People stole the show from Technical Sgt. Keith Mullen aka "Naris Barkley" and his rendition of "Crazy."

It was a tough call for the judges, but the "Village Vamps" prevailed with the best costumes and best overall lip-sync.

"We had the crowd behind us and we just lip-synced our hearts out," said Erika Glon, Commander's Action Group. "The hardest part of the act was keeping my moustache from falling off."

There was plenty of food to eat: hot dogs, half smokes, hamburgers, turkey burgers, potato salad, soda, water, and numerous desserts for the crowd to feast on.
Dishes featured in the best dish contest included Hawaiian Dessert, Dump Cake, Greek Shrimp salad and Buffalo Chicken Dip.

The best dish contest went to Missy Koehler, spouse of Technical Sgt. Wade Koehler, AFDW Safety. Mrs. Koehler won for her "Buffalo Chicken Dip.
