Haynes Air Force District of Washington Public Affairs Joint Base Andrews, Md. -- Air Force District of Washington's 2012 Feds Feed Families campaign wrapped up Aug. 31 on Joint Base Andrews, Md., to help fill the pantries of local citizens. This year, AFDW's goal was to donate 20,000 pounds of nonperishable food items to the local food banks. AFDW Airmen surpassed their goal, donating 20,924 pounds of nonperishable food items. "Andrews definitely led the way and accounted for almost 10 percent of all Air Force collections worldwide," said Capt. Philip Lere, the Joint Base Andrews Feds Feed Families campaign project officer. "The community should be proud of the impact it's been able to have." Feds Feed Families is an annual Department of Defense and National Capital Region initiative to raise awareness about hunger. DoD officials set a goal of collecting 1.5 million pounds of nonperishable food and household products during this year's annual voluntary food drive. The 11th Wing took the lead in donations for AFDW, donating 10,210 pounds of items. The 79th Medical Wing came in second, donating 3,730 pounds. "The volunteers did a great job of motivating their shops to donate and they were the key to meeting the installation goal," said Lere. "It was great to see the base come together for this campaign." The final pick up on Andrews was Aug. 29. "All the collected items will go directly to helping people in the NCR," said Lere.
