With the NFL season underway, highly-paid professionals strap on their cleats and put on their helmets.  Meanwhile, Airmen, civilians and their family members grab flags and head to a makeshift football field here.

Bolling began its flag football season Sept. 15 and the season runs through Oct. 27, with games being played on Monday and Wednesday nights.

This year's teams consist of those from 744th Communications Group, 11th Logistics Readiness Squadron, 11th Civil Engineer Squadron, 11th Security Forces Squadron, 11th Mission Support Squadron, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard, Defense Intelligence Agency, 579th Medical Group and the White House Communications Agency.

The season openers began with three teams scoring zero points as LRS forfeited to DIA, MDG shut out MSS 36-0, and CE continued the onslaught beating SFS 20-0. But, CE fell to LRS,14-6.  Competition stiffened with a rematch between the reigning champion WHCA and CG, ending with WHCA being dethroned as the CG won 24-19. In the final game of the week MDG showed they are a force to be reckoned with this year beating up on HG with a final score of 30-0.

At the end of last year's season, the 744th CG beat the 579th MDG, forcing a situation where CG had to beat WHCA twice to lay claim to championship honors. The CG beat WHCA and forced a second game. The fatigue of playing three games in one night caught up to the CG and WHCA won the final game, becoming the 2007 champs.

"I think it's definitely a possibility for us to get back to the championship game," said Airman 1st Class Nick Muller, 744th CG. "It only takes one play, offensively or defensively to change a game, and even though we've lost two key airmen to Kuwait and Iraq, we'll still have play makers."

Deployments, changes of duty stations and separations mean every team, no matter how they finished the previous year has a chance of going from worst to first and staking their claim on flag football greatness with bragging rights until the next season when it starts all over again.
