9-11 hero headlines AFDW Wingman day

Michael Hurley, who served the City of New York as the Port Authorities’ highest authority on fire and emergency evacuations during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, presented a slideshow during the Air Force District of Washington's Wingman day on Jan 13, 2009. Wingman day is a chance for Airmen to recognize the coworkers who cover their backs on a day-to-day basis and recommit to being good wingmen themselves. Mr. Hurley has earned medals for his heroism during the 1993 car bombing of the World Trade Center as well as his actions on Sept. 11. He is now site manager for the recovery and reconstruction effort at Ground Zero in New York.

AFDW Commander Maj. Gen. Darrell D. Jones observes the Honor Guard ceremonial casket bearars drill with a full scale replica coffin along side Maj. Tyson Willis, the Honor Guard's director of operations. General Jodice Fini Flight AFDW

Maj. gen. Ralph Jodice, Air Force District of Washington commander wrestles with his wife, Judy, over a fire extinguisher she and Col. Phillip Gibbons, AFDW vice commander, were using to try to douse him with after his final flight Tuesday at Joint base Andrews-NAF Washington, Md. General Jodice was welcomed back to Andrews by base leaders after flying over the Pentagon and in Capitol airspace, with a tradition that dates back to the vietnam war era, when pilots who completed 100 safe combat missions were doused down with fire hoses upon landing. On Wednesday, General Jodice is slated to pass the AFDW guidon to Maj. Gen. Darrell Jones during a change of command ceremony in Hagnar 3 at Andrews.

Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week was Oct. 4-10 on Bolling Air Force Base. The theme for this year was “Stay fire smart! Don’t get burned.” Naval District Washington Fire Prevention Division officials conducted various training exercises, including how to properly extinguish common household fires with a home extinguisher. They also provided information at set-ups around the base, including the base exchange and the child development centers.
