It was with great sadness that the Air Force District of Washington announced the death of its Director of Staff, Mr. James A. Wolffe, who passed away Dec. 2 following a long illness.

"Jim loved Airmen and he loved the Air Force," said AFDW Commander Maj. Gen. Ralph Jodice. "He worked tirelessly to find the right people the Air Force District of Washington needed when it was established. His fingerprints are on every part of our organization and his contributions helped shape AFDW into the world-class organization it is today."

Mr. Wolffe graduated with honors from George Washington University with a degree in journalism. After spending several years as a reporter for Army Times, he was named editor of Air Force Times.

In 1998, he left the Times to take a job as Special Assistant to the Secretary and Under Secretary of the Air Force. Mr. Wolffe worked for the Air Force secretary until 2001, when he accepted the position of Director of Staff for AFDW.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 6 at the Burke Presbyterian Church, 5690 Oak Leather Drive, Burke, Va., at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity or Capital Hospice.
